Spiderhouse Ballroom presents a fundraiser to benefit

Heart & Soul School of Music

February 2, 2014

In spite of it being a freezing cold Super Bowl Sunday, we had a nice turnout for our very first fundraiser.  A great time was had by all.  We were lucky to have an amazing lineup of awesome performers.  If you haven't done so already, please take the time to check out Danger*Cakes, Lex Land, BLXPLTN, SUR, and Cari Palazzolo.  Not only are they all acts with incredible talent, but they all have generous hearts.  Many of the acts featured some of our wonderful educators.  We thank them again for the time they donated to help raise funds for the program.

On Saturday, April 26th 2014, the Karaoke Underground will celebrate its tenth anniversary with a party at Red 7. Proceeds from the party will benefit Heart & Soul School of Music. In case you’re unfamiliar, the Karaoke Underground is for punk and indie rock fans who love to scream, yelp, croon, bark and sometimes even sing their favorites from artists like Bikini Kill, Black Flag, Modest Mouse, the Misfits, Cat Power, the Pixies, Dead Kennedys, Sleater-Kinney, Pavement, Joy Division, Fugazi, Guided By Voices and many more. It's video karaoke with onscreen lyrics, a stage, and the chance to sing great songs you just can't find anywhere else. The event will commence with a performance by The Missyfits at 9PM. The all-female band features Underground Karaoke co-founder, Hannah Ford and four fabulous ladies that performs Misfits songs in the style of '60s girl group acts.

The Karaoke Underground 10th Anniversary Party will raise vital funds for Heart & Soul School of Music. Heart & Soul is dedicated to empowering students with the tools to learn and grow through music education and mentorship. This event will provide Heart and Soul with the necessary funds for administrative costs, supplies and most importantly, a scholarship fund to give private music instruction to students in need. We at Heart & Soul understand and appreciate the value of music and believe it's lessons should be available to all, which is why we want to make sure students, regardless of their financial situations, can partake.

We have a fundraising goal of $1,000 for Heart & Soul School of Music. I would greatly appreciate your help in hitting this target. Karaoke Underground is accepting free-will donations of $8 to sing. Austin Pizza will be providing free pizza for the event. Transmission Events has generously donated concert tickets for Chuck Ragan, Trans Am with Survive, and The Mountain Goats as raffle prizes. The Girls Rock Camp of Austin has graciously donate a Ladies Rock Camp Scholarship to be auctioned off and Tom Tom Magazine will be giving away issues. We are expecting a few hundred people to be in attendance at the event and are inviting local businesses to help our cause and donate an item for our raffle or auction. If you would like to donate, please contact H&S Director, Jamie Bahr at Jamie.Bahr@gmail.com.

On Sunday, June 8th 2014, Heart & Soul School of Music proudly presents the First Annual Spring Student Showcase!  Heart & Soul Students will perform the pieces they have been working on for the past semester from 1pm to 3pm at the Hope Farmers Market at Plaza Saltillo, 412 Comal Street, Austin, TX  78702.  Please join us as we support these new musicians.  Complimentary refreshments will follow the showcase.

It's Friday, August 22, 2014 and the new school year is right around the corner.  For some students, it's already begun.  So with all of the daily stresses of homework and afterschool projects, don't forget to take some time to practice your instrument.  Even if it's only for a few minutes, play a song that you like.  Do a few scales or exercises.  It only takes a moment and will not only help clear your mind and relieve stress, but it makes you a better musician.  So go on, rock out with your bad self!  And of course, Welcome Back!
